From complex information to executive decisions

We help organisations address complex business, data, workflow and implementation challenges where senior expertise, cross-functional and cross-border perspective, and hands-on execution are required — from identifying the need, through analysis and solution design, to implementation. We bring particular expertise in financial services, regulated environments and investment-related complexity.

When can we help?

The selected examples below illustrate situations where focused external support can help address a specific business challenge, including challenges applicable across sectors and others arising in financial services and regulated environments.

Blind Spot

A recent event has revealed that complex information does not provide a sufficiently clear view of exposures, risks or emerging issues

Blocker

Critical reporting or processes have reached a point where the existing manual and fragmented approach can no longer support the required scale, blocking further progress

Complexity

Mergers, acquisitions or cross-border structures create additional complexity and require a structured framework for reporting, controls and operations

Financial sector

Assurance Gap

A regulatory issue, audit finding or internal review has highlighted the need for independent challenge or assurance of controls, governance or risk taxonomy

Financial sector

Implementation Risk

Financial services & regulated environments
A new business initiative — such as a product, service or market entry — has raised implementation concerns with risk, compliance or audit, calling for independent challenge and the right governance and operating framework

Unclear Ownership

An important cross-functional initiative is not progressing because no single internal function has the full cross-functional perspective or mandate needed to move from analysis to implementation

What we do

Our work combines focused advisory support with practical implementation across complementary areas.

Data analytics & business-led automation

Transform fragmented data and complex requirements into tailored analytics, reporting and business-led automation, including data sourcing, mapping and consolidation, validation, analytical design, quantitative analysis and modelling, database and decision-support tool development and, where relevant, implementation with client teams.

Financial sector

Risk, controls & governance

Assess, design and strengthen risk and control frameworks across business, investment and operational risk, including governance, risk taxonomy, risk and control assessment, investor compliance, selected regulatory and conduct controls, including Best Execution, trade surveillance and suitability, regulatory framework, regulatory control testing and audit readiness assessments, business continuity, operational resilience, remediation and practical implementation.

New business, products & operating models

Design and implement operating models, governance structures, roles, processes and interfaces to support new businesses, market entry, new products and services, including product structuring and product governance, product viability and operational readiness, and evolving organisational requirements.

AI-assisted business workflows with AAIID

Advanced AI-enabled workflows

Design and optimise AI-assisted business workflows using AAIID — AI-Assisted Instruction and Prompt Design — a methodology developed by Blue Oceans to make workflow design simpler and more manageable and the resulting workflows more consistent and repeatable. Depending on the use case, this can include reusable instructions and guidance, task-specific prompts, AI-assisted execution, validation and practical automation, with governance, risk and controls considered where relevant.

Optimising AI Workflows for Business

Practical business training covering the progression from effective use of generative AI through reusable instructions and prompt drafting to AAIID, AI-assisted workflows and business applications, AI governance and risk management, and regulatory compliance and control frameworks.

Selected data analytics case studies

The examples below focus on data analytics and decision support solutions. Case studies relating to other advisory services are available for discussion on request.

CASE STUDY 1 · ISSUER RISK

Global issuer concentration analytics

Challenge

Multiple source databases across five booking locations included both consolidated sources and sources requiring manual Excel consolidation of equity and fixed income exposures. Security and issuer mapping, particularly for special purpose vehicles, made it difficult to obtain a rapid consolidated view of maximum default exposure by issuer.

Transformation

A reporting tool was built together with the database structures required for consolidation, embedding security and issuer mapping and consolidating all five booking locations into one issuer risk reporting process using the latest available data.

Outcome

Consolidated issuer risk reports could be produced within a few minutes, particularly valuable during periods of market stress, while the issuer data could also be reused for other concentration views, including sector concentration. The reporting also supported senior risk-management and governance oversight.

CASE STUDY 2 · PRIVATE EQUITY

Private markets portfolio analytics

Challenge

A large private equity portfolio including recently launched funds as well as legacy funds relied on multiple internal and external information sources with different formats, structures and levels of granularity. Labour-intensive mapping, aggregation, validation and reconciliation limited consolidated visibility of performance, exposure and concentration across the portfolio and underlying investments.

Transformation

Consistent mapping was established across products, funds and underlying investments, with performance, exposure and concentration data aggregated and validated at each reporting level. Reporting was designed to provide clear consolidated views across the portfolio, funds, direct investments and co-investments.

Outcome

Automated data imports, processing and report production substantially reduced manual effort and enabled production within minutes, subject to targeted reconciliation and consistency checks, providing reliable consolidated information for senior management oversight and decision making.

Blue Oceans combines senior business judgement, cross-functional perspective and practical implementation capability to address complex advisory and decision-support requirements, with particular expertise in financial services.

01

Business, risk and product perspective

Advisory work is approached across business objectives, product considerations, risk, governance and implementation, drawing on experience across business and control functions rather than through a single functional lens.

02

From quantitative analysis to practical implementation

Recommendations are developed with practical implementation in mind, including operating processes, controls, data requirements and decision support solutions, with hands-on implementation support where relevant.

03

International and institutional perspective

Advisory work involving market entry, counterparties, products and governance is approached from a cross-border and institutional perspective, with close attention to complex stakeholder requirements.

How we work

A structured four-step approach aligns objectives, analysis, solution development and implementation with the client’s priorities and decision making process.

01

Define objectives & scope

Clarify the business objective, expected outcome, scope, stakeholders, constraints and decision making requirements.

02

Assess context, requirements & options

Assess the relevant business, regulatory, risk, product, operational and data context, identify key requirements, dependencies, issues and implementation risks, and evaluate the available options.

03

Develop the approach

Develop the proposed approach, solution or implementation plan, including the required analysis, design, governance, processes, controls or analytical tools as applicable, and agree the approach with the relevant client stakeholders before execution.

04

Execute & implement

Execute the agreed approach, including hands-on analysis, solution and analytical tool development, and coordinate implementation with client teams where internal processes, systems or production environments are involved.
